Farne islands puffins & seabirds wildlife photography workshop

Location: Farne Islands, Northumberland (United Kingdom)

Dates: Thursday 19th June & Thursday 26th June 2014

Duration: 1 Day or 1 Day & Early Evening Workshop
Group: Maximum of 10 per workshop

The Farne Islands off Northumberland’s coastline are a magnificent wildlife paradise and host to 160,000 seabirds and 4,000 grey seals. The breeding season is an amazing spectacle to behold with busy puffins, guillemots, razorbills, shags and countless other seabirds covering the islands and the seas around.

This workshop gives you a full day out on and around the Farne Islands as well as an evening cruise where we can photograph the cliff face habitats in the early evening light, fingers crossed for the spectacle of fledging guillemot jumplings. As well as touring around the islands getting very close to the cliff face nests we give you the maximum amount we can on each island – at least 2 hours on Staple Island and more on Inner Farne – more than you get with the usual trips.There is something for every nature-loving photographer here regardless of level of ability. Group sizes are kept small enough to allow individual tuition whenever needed and we’ll be on hand at all times to give you expert help to get some fantastic photographs of the abundant wildlife. After our afternoon session on Inner Farne we will return to Seahouses for a traditional meal of fish & chips* before heading back out for our evening cruise. The islands are much quieter and the light will change as we look out for ‘jumplings’, an amazing spectacle where guillemot chicks take their rite of passage by leaping down the cliffs to join their fathers in the sea below. Note, bookings are available which exclude the evening cruise.

Itinerary

This workshop will begin at 10am. The emphasis on the workshop is to get you out amongst the wildlife to spend as much time photographing as possible. En route to the islands we’ll spend time giving you some group and individual tuition so you can get the best out of the day and then we’ll let you get on with photographing the spectacle.

The weather is a factor in determining the itinerary but roughly speaking we’ll aim to do the following (not necessarily in this order):

  • Short safety briefing and code of conduct re wildlife;·

  • Boat will set off from Seahouses harbour to tour around the island hot-spots where you’ll be able to see thousands of sea birds and seals from sea level. This is great for viewing the cliff colonies and pelagic rafts of birds;

  • Land on Staple Island in the outer group of Islands and spend about 2 hours on the island. The access to this island is less easy than Inner Farne, so if the sea state doesn’t allow landing, we’ll spend more time either on the sea looking round the cliffs, or on Inner Farne;

  • Land on Inner Farne in the inner group of islands and spend another 2-3 hours photographing the birds

  • Return to the harbour;

  • Fish and chips in Seahouses! For those that want to eat with us afterwards and chew the fat about the day (*food not included in the price. Sorry!);

  • Head out for our evening cruise with our eyes peeled for guillemot jumplings;

  • Return to the harbour around 9pm.

Please note, the National Trust levy a landing fee, currently £6.40 per island per person. Children cost £3.20 per island and families £16. If you are a National Trust member this is free, but please remember to bring your card.
