Peter Haygarth, assistant tour leader
South West Scotland’s Solway is a little visited, wildlife rich gem. We pack our itinerary with opportunities to photograph some of the UK’s most iconic species of the season, including all the reds – red deer rutting, red kites roosting in great numbers and red squirrel running around getting ready for winter! We make use of an exclusive network of bespoke professional hides to get you close to all of the region’s top species… these are the secret places that many top pros use to get those shots you see and think “wow – how did they get that?!”
Our recommended campsite has wildlife on tap too – roe deer, badger and brown hare frequent the site, as do red squirrel and a multitude of birds. At this time of year we will also be looking for fungi and insects as ideal macro subjects. And with terrific opportunities for landscape and dark skies photography too, you’ll have the chance to learn a wealth of new techniques and never be short of subjects and inspiration!
5th & 6th November 2016 - £295
Includes all hide fees, minibus transfers to/from all locations, all photography and videography tuition and guidance on location and in critique sessions, individual feedback, great fun and company. All attendees are also invited to enter your favourite shot from the workshop into our competition!
If you require overnight accomodation during this workshop please either add a wigwam stay to your basket, or see our Accomodation Guide below for hotel and B&B recommendations (though you will need to book directly with the owners for these).
SORRY - SOLD OUT for 2016
why not join us in SPRING 2017?
The kingfisher hide is located along a tidal burn, so ground is boggy - please bring wellies and clothing appropriate for autumn in Scotland :)
Please note that our hides are remote, so toilet facilities are not available. However we will do our best to provide toilet breaks when moving between hides.
Hide days are lengthy, so please bring a packed lunch.
A great range is of accomodation is available locally, to suit all budgets: camping, wigwam, B&B or hotel
We can recommend the following:
Solway View Campsite, which has excellent camping facilities in tents or 'wigwams' with electricity, heating and kitchen, or you can bring your campervan or caravan. Please note - we have reserved all the wigwams for this weekend so please ask us about availability, not the campsite!
Camping: tent and up to 2 people £12per night
Wigwam with electricity, heating and kitchen from : double £19.50 pppn, single £32pppn
B&B at Anchorlee Guest House Kirkcudbright: doubles £35pppn, single occupancy £50 pppn - we have first hand reports that it's lovely, and
the owners are very helpful with early breakfasts too!
Selkirk Arms Hotel offers fine B&B accomodation as well as great food for the evenings.
The food is excellent and staff lovely whenever we eat at the restaurant in the Selkirk Arms Hotel.
We will usually also head to the award-winning chipshop Polarbites on Kirkcudbright harbour at some stage of our stay!
Both places offer vegetarian options.
What Our Clients Say...
"Wow, what a weekend in Scotland - I'm still buzzing from it! I arrived hoping to get a glimpse of wildlife that has so far eluded me and I was not disappointed. As someone with limited photography experience and often getting frustrated with camera settings, I am thrilled with my shots from the weekend. Trai and Peter guided me to ensure I would get the best out of my camera and achieve the results I wanted. Personally, the weekend was more than a photography trip, seeing badgers for the first time, having a close encounter with red deer and watching the spectacle of over 140 red kites feeding was a weekend to never forget. Thank you Trai and Peter, I'll definitely be back for another photography trip with Enlightened Media."

Home, shattered, happy! If Carlsberg did Scottish Safaris........ Thank you Trai Anfield and Peter Haygarth for another fabulous photography trip. Amazing environments, animals and people!....My lenses I think are your basic ones, but the weekend was well set up so everyone could get great pics regardless of where they are on their photography journey...
it was awesome!
Charlotte Angus, SW Scotland Safari client 2015
"You asked for comments and I can only say you got it right. Both yourself (Trai) and Peter offered help and hints in a non patronising manner and instilled confidence. You dealt with any issues that arose in a competent way and gave encouragement throughout. 10/10 to Peter for getting me to use the 180 macro lens as I can be a stubborn creature at times. I'll be using it now!"
