I prefer to visit the Pantanal in September/October, as this marks the end of the dry season when jaguars tend to stay close to the banks of the river to drink, keep cool by having a dip, and hunt capybara and caiman - it's the most active and exciting time for jaguar photography!

Aug 30: Take an international flight from your home country, timed to arrive in Sao Paulo today

Aug 30: After breakfast you will be transferred to the airport to connect with your short flight to Cuiaba.  On arrival we will be met by our private expert naturalist and there will be some time to pick up water and other snacks and comfort items before driving south towards the famous Transpanteneiara road.

As we travel along the unsealed road our Pantanal wildlife viewing opportunities really begin, and this first section of our safari is when we concentrate on the semi-nocturnal species to be found in and around the wetlands of the northern Pantanal.

Our overnight accommodation - ranch 'Pousa Alegre' (all meals included) - is roughly half way along our overall route, so is a great stopping point and, most importantly, offers wonderful opportunities to encounter giant anteater, tapir, ocelot, crab eating racoons and foxes, and a host of other mammal and bird species.  We may spot our first caimans here and neotropical otter is a possibility too.

After settling in, exploring the grounds and having dinner we will finish our day with a spotlighted night-time drive looking for crab eating racoons and foxes, anteaters and lesser cats such as ocelot, though these are rare.

Aug 30: We spend a full day at 'Pousa Alegre' starting with an early morning safari looking for Giant Anteater (often approached on foot) and Tapir.   Throughout the day you may rest or have options to take independent walks, gentle horse-back safaris or explore the area by safari vehicle.

Late afternoon safari followed by a second drive looking for nocturnal wildlife such as ocelot and crab eating foxes.   Overnight ‘Pousada Alegre’ again (all meals included)

We will take a final early morning safari close to the ‘Pousada Alegre’lodge before breakfast and check out.

Next we drive 4-5 hours (with stops) all the way to the end of the Transpantaneira road where we find ‘Hotel Pantanal Norte’ (all meals included) the best lodge on the Cuiaba River and our base for the next 5 nights.

We should arrive in time time to stretch our legs, explore the grounds to find the resident macaws and toucans and have dinner before heading for bed before an early start on our first big day on the water tomorrow!

The northern Pantanal is the best place in the world to encounter jaguar, and on this Brazil photography safari we will go all out to find and photograph these beautiful, powerful predators.  Often lounging on the banks of the river, keeping cool and scouting for prey, this mighty cat alone is worth the journey.  It is also at home in the water, and generally not phased by the presence of humans in boats, so often presents unique and special photographic possibilities.

Our group has chartered an entire 12-person boat for our small group of 4-6 guests, so each photographer will have unfettered access to photograph on both sides of the craft.  As a private charter we can be on the water and ready to begin our photography at first light each morning.  Most tours return to their base for the middle of the day, but as we are a private group, we have the option to continue exploring the backwaters, fortified by a packed lunch, while looking for jaguar and also appreciating the countless other mammals, birds and reptiles that call the Panatanal home.

Sep 01 - 04:

Five full days of morning and afternoon small group boat safaris in one of the best locations in the world to see Jaguars. There is also a chance to photograph Tapir, Giant River Otters, Black Howler Monkeys, Iguana, lots of Caimans and some magnificent birdlife.  As mentioned above, we may choose to take a packed lunch and remain out on the Cuiba river throughout the day.  If we choose to return to the lodge there are many photographic opportunities in and around the grounds before we return to the river later in the day.

Sep 05:

After breakfast you will be transferred 5-6 hours back to Cuiaba to connect with your flight to Sao Paulo, On arrival you will take the free shuttle bus to the ‘Pullman Sao Paulo’ (breakfast included)

Sep 06: Morning to relax before taking the shuttle to the international terminal to connect with your onward flight, bringing your incredible Brazil photography safari to an end... time to start editing up those wonder shots!
