Greenland In Winter Could Be For You If...

  • you want to photograph High Arctic wildlife up close, polar landscapes, aurora

  • you crave wilderness experiences

  • you have a keen sense of adventure and are reasonably fit

  • you prefer small, intimate photography groups

  • the experience itself is an important aspect of your photography

  • you enjoy being utterly remote in a place few have seen and photographed

Greenland Winter 2027 Photography Expedition (01 - 13 April)

Greenland is all but impenetrable in winter, inaccessible by boat or dog sled.

Only by helicopter and snowmobile is it possible to venture beyond the frozen seas and towering icebergs that surround it, and steal into the vast icy continent that is home to many rare and spectacular Arctic species.

You are invited to be amongst the very few who will ever explore the region in its full winter majesty.

Greenland's Winter Wildlife

Frozen seas surround Greenland in winter, providing passage for polar bears to roam the icebound shores.

Our remote accommodation is near a well-used polar bear trail, and they have even been known to pay a visit to the house itself!  Crucially, the house sits beside fjord sea ice on which the bears hunt.

Our base is also close to where two fjord systems join, offering refuge for ring seals between the ice sheets: a real temptation for passing hungry polar bears.

We will make a dedicated day trip into the coastal mountain strip, where sizeable herds of musk oxen graze throughout the year.

While out in the snowfields we will also be searching for Arctic fox, Arctic hare and ptarmigan...not easy to spot in their white winter coats and plumage, but staggeringly beautiful in this high key environment.

Greenland's Winter Landscapes

This icy, snowy wilderness also offers us incredible opportunities for landscape photography, including stunning shots of animals within their environment, like the Arctic fox below.

This region is often likened to the Antarctic in its sublime palette, unsullied beauty and almost incomprehensible vastness.  Myriad blues dominate the colour range, icebergs trapped in the frozen seas tower to creaking, groaning heights and wildlife survives here only if it can outwit the harshest elements.

In addition, with dark skies and active conditions, this can be an extraordinary place to witness the Arctic aurora, right on our own doorstep.

Our Greenland Base

'The House' (above) is our base for the duration of our time in Sydkap... well it is the only house around for hundreds of miles!

This is not luxury accommodation, but it is safe, secure, warm and even has two basic loos.

It is not huge, though, so you should probably expect to share a room on this trip.

A range of diets can be catered for, with 3 meals of high end expedition style food offered daily including desert, snacks, hot drinks, water, soft drinks and a limited range of alcoholic drinks.

Why Choose This Greenland Photography Expedition?

Other Greenland photography tours are - of course - available, but they tend to be ship based and only in summer.  The very few land based trips only operate in a relatively accessible area on the coast of eastern Greenland.  No other tours can access the supremely remote and isolated areas of this high arctic world we do - making this tour truly the only one of its kind.

How Can We Claim This Degree Of Exclusivity?

The logistics required to run a land based tour are so complex, and without experienced experts to provide them it is simply not possible.

And there is only one company in Greenland that has the required fleet of super powerful snowmobiles, access to remote accommodation and a guide team with the knowledge, experience and insurance provisions to safely run such a high Arctic expedition.

This British owned and staffed logistics company has worked with numerous research and documentary teams including BBC, National Geographic and Disney+.  The team is led by a renowned British polar explorer who has successfully run over 250 Arctic expeditions, specialising in Greenland for over 30 years.

In partnership with Wild Lens, Trai has entered into an exclusive contract with this logistics provider, and can confidently say that no other company can offer Greenland photography expeditions of this caliber.

Where Exactly Will We Be?

Our expedition begins and ends in Constable Point.

On landing we switch from small plane to helicopter, for the hour's flight to the isolated peninsula of Sydkap.

The next 10 -12 days* (weather dependent) will be spent exploring the Sydkap region by snowmobile and helicopter, as well as on foot at times to get close to certain species.

We end our trip back at Constable Point in time to catch our flight out.

*Our intention is to maximise the time we spend over in the Sydkap region, though exact journey times may vary depending on weather conditions.
