All Hail Our Drivers!
One of the highlights of my latest stint as Photographer In Residence at Alex Walker's Kenya safari camps has been getting to know the...

Naming A Mara Lion
Naming a Mara lion is not as easy as it might seem. As well as an honour, it feels like a big responsibility, and there are criteria to be met. Niels Mogensen, head researcher at Mara Predator Conservation Project is being strict - on his watch there will be no more Anglicised names, only authentic Masai or Swahili, and no generics either - each name must reflect the individual characteristics of that lion… I’m going to need some help! I’m out on the plains of Mara North C

When A Tree Outshone The Big Five
This week I’ve been taking my guests here in the Masai Mara to see a tree. You’d might not think that would be top of the excitement list...

Top 4 Safari Extras To Look For In 2019
On our safaris, in addition to classic game drives, you can always expect some extras that will elevate your experience beyond expectations. Here are our Top 4 safari extras to look out for 2019. Last year my curse seemed to have lifted, with leopard sightings in Botswana and Rajasthan, but on this trip leopards had been spotted ev

Serian: Time is the Secret
The true secrets of photography are elusive. I’m realising that time, rather than the latest and most expensive equipment, is the key to...

The Small Things
It’s very tempting when we come on safari to focus entirely on the large, charismatic mammals - lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, rhino, giraffe, zebra…the list is dazzling... But a few hours spent wandering with a macro lens can be equally rewarding. This praying mantis with its alien features is every bit as exotic and spectacular as any of the Big Five when you look closely! Roisin Allen, who manages the three Serian camps in Kenya, has a passion for the insect life o

Fair Weather Photographers Need Not Apply
As part of my residency at Alex Walker’s Serian camps in Kenya I’ve been lucky enough to accompany some of our guests on game drives throughout the Masai Mara. Each morning has brought sunshine, but during most afternoons in the north the clouds have built to give torrential downpours. “Have a great drive” the camp staff say as we head off “...see you for dinner”. To my surprise one guest replied “Yeah - unless it rains - then we’ll be back sooner”....obviously this particul
